fish for trophy halibut and bottomfish."
Join Pacific Northwest halibut expert

they take you on a remarkable journey into the underwater world of
Alaska halibut and bottomfish. Your entire family will be spellbound

how halibut behave on shallow reefs and in deep holes; and how
schoools of baitfish appear from a halibut's point of view.
This video covers bait and lure rigs,
scent trails, static and dynamic presentations, the most effective
herring rig for halibut, a mixture/cure that makes your herring
shine like a polished mirror, and effective bait-rig combos to
enhance your angling success. With this digital-quality video, there
is much to learn: You'll discover the Batin Bouncer, the most
effective jig you can use for catching lunker halibut; a
twister-tail rig that is most visible and effective for all
bottomfish in Alaska waters; techniques to trigger strikes when fish
are off the bite, and how to expertly rig spreader bars, circle
hooks, and much, much more.
Special Bonus: Chris and John reveal
the results of field testing a sensational new halibut attractor
light that will substantially increase your halibut catch by 100
percent or more. This video is a must have for any angler's video
library.
Underwater
Secrets of Alaska Sportfish (Currently
being updated. Not available)
If you’ve always wanted to see
underwater video footage of how Alaska rainbows, grayling, char and
other species feed underwater, what flies they prefer, and what fish
prefer and ignore about your fishing technique and presentations,
make it a point to purchase Chris Batin's latest and most exciting
work to date," Underwater Secrets of Alaska Sportfish."
The 45 minute video is produced,
directed and videographed by Chris Batin, Alaska’s premier angling
writer and photographer. It will answer your questions about how
trout, salmon, grayling and halibut behave underwater to a variety
of flies and lures.
"This is a project I’ve been
working on since 1992," says Batin, who is also editor and
publisher of Alaska Angler Publications. "One never knows how a
project like this will go. Fortunately for me, this one goes beyond
my wildest expectations."
"I've never get tired of
watching these fish react underwater to various baits and flies,
" says Mark Wade of The Fly Hatch and one of Alaska's premier
fly tyers. "I learn something every time I watch the
video."
Batin says if you’ve every picked
up a flyrod, or interested in Alaska fish and have never fished
before in your life, this video will make anyone a better angler.
"Many of the scenes will
mesmerize the viewer as they did--and still do--my production
staff," he said. "I continue to study the raw footage from
the first video, and still pick up something new each time."
Although Batin has been scuba diving
since he was 14 years old, obtaining the footage over the years
wasn’t without it’s perils. "It’s expensive, and is very
equipment and labor intensive," he said. While my 26 years of
experience as an award-winning angling photographer helped to some
extent, video is far more intense and unforgiving, especially
underwater, "he points out.
He uses a variety of cameras and
equipment to obtain the footage he needs, and lots of prescriptions.
"I’ve had giardia more times
than I care to count, cryptosporidium and various aches and pains
from spending hundreds of hours in Alaska’s rivers and
streams." Batin recalls. "One drop is all it takes, but
then again, these are the hazards of diving in Alaska freshwater.
Cold is another. At times I’ve had to stand in a hot shower for a
half hour to get warmed up. Even in a full dry suit, Alaska waters
are very cold, especially the deep, lakes. But the resulting footage
has been more than worth the effort, and I expect it will be an
immediate hit with anglers."
"Subject clips show how rainbow
trout char and grayling feed, of 6 to 8 large rainbows actually
feeding during a hatch, how various leaders and lines appear
underwater, where fish move to when they are not feeding, and more.
On one dive, I observed the difference in one leader type over
another, in that one was very visible and the other was not, and it
personally changed how I fished and what I used. No marketing hype
here. This is actually footage from the fisheye point-of-view, and
it’s invaluable information anglers can apply this season for
kings, silvers, rainbow trout and grayling....not to mention
halibut."
One can only speculate as to the hows
and whys of fish refusing a fly, or why they hit with such
aggression."
I was pleased to see that many of the
concepts I discuss in my book were actually how fish behave
underwater," he said. "But the one thing that is perhaps
most surprising is that there are far more fish in streams and
rivers than we can ever see from topside. But anglers will see that
for themselves in the video presentation."
Chris Batin has spent hundreds of
hours diving, observing, and video-taping the habits of Alaska
sportfish. The Great Alaska Sportsman Show attendees were
pleased to have sponsored a sneak preview of Batin's newest video in
early April, where anglers filled the seats to capacity.
The underwater video presentation and
instruction will show examples of rainbow trout holding in various
portions of the stream, how they feed on drift items; where to find
trophy grayling in a stretch of river, and how they hold and feed,
salmon response to flies, and how various flies appear from a
fish’s point of view.
Anglers and non-anglers will be amazed
at watching how a 110-pound halibut--the largest ever recorded on
video-- inhales a specially rigged bait;
Watch crystal clear footage of how
halibut approach baits, and the ones they favor, and the others they
ignore;
Freshwater anglers will also see how
and why trout hold in select waters. See actual footage of how and
why they miss lures and flies, the importance of certain tackle, the
lures and baits they prefer. You will see this from footage taken
from Alaska waters that all of us fish, from a fish-eye view.
See how a trout and grayling position
themselves in a pool, and footage of them feeding; See the best
flies used for success;
See how plankton blooms affect your
fishing success;
See a midge hatch as it takes place
underwater, and the fish feeding frenzy it causes as sport fish go
into a wild feeding frenzy.
"Underwater Secrets of Alaska
Sportfish" is the first in a series of instructional videos
produced for anglers by Alaska Angler Video Productions of
Fairbanks, Alaska.
This video, Batin says, addresses and
answers many of the questions and problems anglers have asked me
over the last 26 years.
"Some of my replies were
speculative, as no one knew...But now, I have visual proof," he
says. "And when one has visual proof, the answers take on much
greater meaning and interest. Plus the fact that I was right makes
it especially satisfying."
